Background: Gout, a common inflammatory arthritis from urate crystal deposits, has poor medication adherence despite evidence-based guidelines. Poor management leads to severe health complications, emphasising the need for comprehensive patient education. Online videos offer an informative, easy to access, non time restrictive way to empower patients to understand their chronic disease.
Aim: To assess the efficacy of an educational video co-designed by patients with gout and rheumatologists on gout management, focusing on enhancing patient activation and knowledge.
Methods: An educational video addressing gout treatment was crafted through iterative focus group sessions involving rheumatologists and patient consumer groups. The video underwent rigorous reviews within each group prior to its finalisation. Within the Rheumatology outpatient clinic, a before-and-after study design is employed. Patients with gout were invited to participate. Demographic data was collected. Participants were asked to complete both the Patient Activation Measure (PAM) and a knowledge questionnaire. Access to the co-developed educational video was provided via an online link. After a period of 1-2 weeks, re-evaluation of PAM scores and knowledge levels occurred, focusing on changes post-intervention as primary outcomes. Additionally, qualitative patient reports were collected.
